HOW TO GET YOUR LICENSE

Under the Motorcycle Graduated Licensing System (M-GLS), in order to obtain a motorcycle learner, permit you must complete a standardised and compulsory 2-day Learner License course.  Followed by a half-day Check Ride course and then the 1.5-hour Pre-Provisional course.

AJL Training also offers One-on-One Courses for those who have little or no experience with motorcycles (or do not drive a manual car) to build confidence prior to undertaking a Pre-Learner course.

Tasmanian Motorcycle Training and Assessment Program

·         Road rules knowledge test
Must be undertaken at Service Tasmania prior to registering for the Pre-Learner Course

·         Pre-learner motorcycle training course
Is delivered over two consecutive days (around 15 hours). Consists of around 50 activities and includes a permit assessment on range prior to conducting the on-road coaching and mentoring activity. Increased focus on adult learning.

*Passing the pre-learner results in a Learner licence

·         Learner Licence
Minimum learner period is six months.

·         Check Ride
Consists of three and a half hours and includes around 12 activities:
• review of motorcycle permit assessment, skills check (on-range)
• Pre-road briefing then check ride.

*Check ride can be done 28 days after you passed your learners and must be done before your Pre-Provisional test

·         Pre-Provisional test
Consists of one hour and 15 minutes in duration. This test includes approximately 10 activities, including skills check on range and the on-road assessment. There is a maximum of one participant per test undertaken.

*Must pass a check ride before doing the Pre-Provisional Test. Can do Pre-Provisional on or after earliest test date. Passing results in obtaining your P’s.

·         Provisional Licence

HOW TO PICK YOUR FIRST BIKE

Now that you have your license sorted, it is time to pick out your first motorcycle. There are a few things to think of when picking your first motorcycle, such as making sure it is LAMS-approved, what style suits the riding you want to be doing, what your budget is going to be, and whether you want to buy new or used.

What is a LAMS Approved Motorcycle?

When you are a novice rider, that is when you are on your Learners Permit and on your P1 permit in Tasmania, you are restricted to riding only approved motorcycles. These are determined by the Tasmanian Transport Services under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS). A few factors go into determining whether a motorcycle is approved for learners, the main being the motorcycles must have:

  • an engine capacity of 660cc or less
  • a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kw per tonne or less
  • a power up to 25kW or less for electric motorcycles

Some motorcycles may be excluded from the list if they have characteristics that make them unsuitable for learners. Check out the current LAMS Approved List here.

When deciding what style of motorcycle, you should get for your first one, you need to ask yourself, what do I want to do with it? The riding that you want to do will help you decide what sort of learner motorcycle you should buy. For learner motorcycles, the best thing to look out for is a motorcycle that is lightweight, has modest power, has neutral handling and can touch the ground with both feet, this will all help you build your confidence as you get kilometres under your belt.

There are many factors to consider when budgeting to buy your first motorcycle, am I saving up or using finance? Most people spend between $5,000 and $12,000 on their learner motorcycles. This is the spend on the motorcycle itself, your budget also needs to include insurance, any government fees, your license fee and protective gear.

HOW TO PICK YOUR FIRST GEAR

Picking out your first set of motorcycle gear can be a daunting task, but we are here to help pick the right learner motorcycle gear. We stand by the saying, ‘All the gear, all the time’, as over half of road accidents occur within 5 minutes of the rider's residence, so it is essential to ensure that your gear keeps you safe.

The first thing you need to protect while riding is your head, which is why choosing the right helmet is essential. A new helmet should fit firmly but not tight, and all pressure should be even, with slight squishing on the cheeks, as this will wear and mold to your face structure. We recommended trying on several styles to find which helmet fits you best. All helmets worn on the road must meet the Australian Standard AS1698 or EU standards (UNECE22.05) in accordance with the Tasmanian Road Rules 2009.

Next is picking out the right motorcycle jacket. Before picking your motorcycle jacket you need to decide on what kind of riding you will be doing once you get your motorcycle license, e.g. will you be riding daily (commuting to work), are you just doing weekend riding, are you likely to be riding in cold weather/rain or dry and warm weather only. If you are only riding in warm fair weather a casual style motorcycle jacket may suit your riding style more, or if you are doing all-weather commuting a full motorcycle jacket may suit.

Gloves are essential when riding a motorcycle, not only to protect your hands from injury in the case of accidents but also to protect them from debris from the road and from the weather, this includes keeping them warm in winter and cool/covered from long times in the sun in summer. Just like jackets, there is a full range, from heated gloves to leather gloves, to vented gloves.

Much like picking out a motorcycle jacket when picking your pants, you need to decide on what kind of riding you will be doing. You can choose from casual jeans that are lined with Kevlar to help protect you in a slide, or all-weather pants with rain and warmth insulation.
